We believe in using the Safe System approach to improve road safety.

The Safe System is an approach to road safety which puts people at the centre, with a view that every road death or serious injury is preventable.

The Safe System approach has five pillars of action:

  1. Safe Road Users/Behaviours
  2. Safe Speeds
  3. Safe Roads
  4. Safe Vehicles
  5. Post-collision Response

Working on all these parts of the road system ensures that when one aspect of the system fails, the other pillars will continue to support safe travel so that no one suffers serious harm from a road traffic collision.

The Safe System approach accepts that, while road users should behave safely and legally, people do sometimes make mistakes – and these mistakes may lead to crashes.

It is the responsibility of anyone who plays a part in shaping the wider traffic environment – as well as road users – to make sure those mistakes do not result in serious harm. This includes those who plan, design, invest, legislate, build, maintain, enforce, and educate in this area.

Acting together, we can make progress on our Vision Zero ambition, where no one is killed or seriously injured on our roads.
