Smart Card Information Project Smart Card App

This project was set up to create a new mobile phone App to allow customers to purchase and load MCard products from their own mobile phone onto their ITSO smartcard.

Following a competitive procurement process, App development agency Molten Mouse were recruited to develop a 'read/write' app that would enable ITSO products to be purchased via a smartphone and transferred onto a smartcard that could be used on buses and trains across the region.

Molten Mouse worked closely with back office provider Yorcard to ensure a seamless interface for the purchase of the appropriate ITSO product range for each pass type including concessionary passes for young people.

The innovation has been the use of NFC functionality to read a product from an established back-office system (NERO), complete a payment transaction and then write a product to a smart-card via the NFC chip within the phone.

The MCard App is the only one of its kind on the market. The development cost £60K, took 6 months and following full testing was introduced into the MCard retail network in August 2017.
