Re-elected Mayor names choice for deputy role

Alison Lowe has been nominated by West Yorkshire’s newly re-elected Mayor Tracy Brabin as her preferred candidate to continue as Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime.

Ms Lowe was first appointed to the post in 2021, and has been delivering on the Mayor's priority to create a safer, fairer region. She has built a strong reputation as an authority on policing both locally and nationally.

In her role she works with the Mayor to oversee policing across West Yorkshire, on behalf of the public, and commission services such as those to support victims and reduce reoffending.

The announcement comes after Ms Brabin formally re-took the oath to exercise the functions of police and crime commissioner as the Mayor of West Yorkshire.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said:

“Alison and I have worked side by side over the last three years to build a safer, fairer region for everybody.

“We have delivered on our pledges to recruit 750 more frontline police officers and staff while prioritising the safety of women and girls.

“We now have a fantastic opportunity to build on that work and I know Alison will continue to provide a strong voice for all our communities in West Yorkshire.”

Alison Lowe, West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Nominee, added:

“I’m grateful to Tracy for nominating me to be deputy mayor for her second term in office.

“I’m proud to be asked to continue in this role and ensure we have a policing service in West Yorkshire that works for everyone.

“In particular I’ve been pleased to work closely with the Mayor on improving the safety of women and girls and look forward to seeing more of these pioneering projects come to fruition.”

She was previously chief executive of Touchstone, a mental health and wellbeing charity covering West and South Yorkshire, represented Armley on Leeds City Council from 1990 to 2019 and also served as Chair of the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel.

This year the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be producing a new Police and Crime Plan, which will set out a vision for West Yorkshire over the next four years, with the public’s views being instrumental in shaping priorities.

Ms Lowe’s reappointment will be recommended to the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel meeting on Friday June 14 where members will decide on whether or not to support her confirmation.
